Excessive exhaust back pressure is one of the most common causes of turbocharger failure, yet it is often overlooked during diagnosis. When restrictions develop within the exhaust system, the pressure on the exhaust side of the turbocharger increases dramatically, placing unnecessary strain on the turbocharger and engine components.
What Causes Exhaust Back Pressure?
Back pressure is commonly caused by restrictions within the exhaust system, including:
- Blocked or failing catalytic converters
- Restricted diesel particulate filters (DPF)
- Collapsed exhaust sections
- Internal exhaust damage or carbon build-up
When exhaust gases cannot flow freely, pressure begins to build behind the turbocharger, affecting its ability to operate correctly.
How Back Pressure Damages a Turbocharger
Turbochargers are designed to operate within very specific pressure ranges. Excessive back pressure can force the turbocharger shaft forward, causing excessive thrust movement inside the unit.
Over time, this may result in internal contact between components such as:
- The turbo shaft
- Heat shield
- Bearing housing
This internal contact creates excessive wear and heat, eventually leading to serious turbocharger damage or complete failure.
